The UniversityDepartment of Geology,established in 1962,has been playing an important role in nurturing the geo-science education in this mineral rich state of Jharkhand. The Department has celebrated its Diamond Jubileelast year. The Univ. Deptt. Of Geology feels proud to host two very rich Geological Museums- one National and another P.N Bose Memorial Museum with Jharkhand specific rocks, minerals and fossils samples.

It is the only state University Department of Jharkhand which has been awarded with Department of Science and Technology(GOI), DST-FIST and UGS-SAP projects. The Department has established State Level Gem Testing Laboratory with financial aid of Department of Mines and Geology,Government of Jharkhand. The Department has a very rich library named after its FounderHead, Prof Raghuji VermaMemorial Library and it is proud to have a very strong alumni base withgeo-scientists serving in geological organisations like GSI, ONGC, CMPDIL, CIL, MECL, AMD, DMGJkd, IRCON, UCIL, etc. as well as in the topmost echelon of academics. This deptt has recently signed an MoU with CSIR-CIMFR in the presence of CSIR Director General. An online monthly e-newsletter named GEODE has been started by the department. MoUs with Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMDER), Hyderabad. MoU with ICAR- IINRG has been signed to ensure research growth in academics. Various Govt. departments, NGOs and industries are in regular contact with the aim to solicit academic help and guidance from our experience in the field/subject.
